Insurance and referrals
Does TRICARE cover telehealth physical therapy in Hawaii?
Yes. TRICARE covers physical therapy by secure video when it is medically necessary and provided by a TRICARE-authorized provider licensed in Hawaii. The same referral rules apply as for in-person visits, and we verify the cost share before the first visit.
The details
What to know
Answered by the practice of Dr. Elana Shalem, DPT, pelvic floor and orthopedic physical therapist.
Telehealth is covered under TRICARE for many services, including physical therapy, when the provider is licensed in the state where the patient is located and the service is medically necessary.
Most of pelvic floor physical therapy is education, breathing and pressure management, coordination training and a home program, which is why it works well on video. An internal examination is not possible by video; if one would change the plan, Dr. Shalem says so.
For families on Oahu, video removes the drive and the gate. On the neighbor islands, it removes the flight.
How it works
How a virtual visit works
Most of pelvic floor physical therapy is education, breathing and pressure management, movement retraining, and a home program. All of it works on camera. During the evaluation, Dr. Shalem guides a self-assessment so she can see how the pelvic floor is coordinating with breath and movement. An internal examination is not possible by video; if a hands-on assessment would change the plan, she says so and helps the patient find local care.
