Insurance and referrals

Can military families keep their physical therapist after a PCS from Hawaii?

Often, yes. Care can continue by video in any of the seven states where Dr. Shalem is licensed. Coverage after the move depends on the new TRICARE region and plan; we check it before the move.

What to know

Answered by the practice of Dr. Elana Shalem, DPT, pelvic floor and orthopedic physical therapist.

A PCS in the middle of a course of physical therapy usually means starting over: a new referral, a new waitlist, a new therapist. With video visits, the program can continue with the same therapist through the move.

Coverage depends on the TRICARE region and plan at the new duty station, and network status can differ between regions. We review the options before the move so there is no gap in care.

Starting before the move helps: an evaluation in Hawaii and a home program built to travel.

How it works

How a virtual visit works

Most of pelvic floor physical therapy is education, breathing and pressure management, movement retraining, and a home program. All of it works on camera. During the evaluation, Dr. Shalem guides a self-assessment so she can see how the pelvic floor is coordinating with breath and movement. An internal examination is not possible by video; if a hands-on assessment would change the plan, she says so and helps the patient find local care.

You leave the evaluation with a plain-language explanation and a short home program, usually a few minutes a day.
