Insurance and referrals

Does TRICARE Select need a referral for physical therapy in Hawaii?

No. TRICARE Select beneficiaries can book physical therapy with a network provider without a referral. EMS Therapy is in-network with TRICARE West, which keeps the cost share at the network rate.

What to know

Answered by the practice of Dr. Elana Shalem, DPT, pelvic floor and orthopedic physical therapist.

TRICARE Select is the self-managed plan used by many retirees, family members and TRICARE Reserve Select members. It does not use primary care managers or referrals for most care, including physical therapy, though some services require prior authorization.

Seeing a network provider keeps costs at the network copay or cost share for the beneficiary's group, and the provider files the claim. EMS Therapy verifies the benefit before the first visit.

Visits are by video anywhere in Hawaii, usually within a week. The first step is a free 15-minute discovery call at 808-330-7934.

How it works

How a virtual visit works

Most of pelvic floor physical therapy is education, breathing and pressure management, movement retraining, and a home program. All of it works on camera. During the evaluation, Dr. Shalem guides a self-assessment so she can see how the pelvic floor is coordinating with breath and movement. An internal examination is not possible by video; if a hands-on assessment would change the plan, she says so and helps the patient find local care.
