Insurance and referrals
Does TRICARE cover physical therapy for pelvic pain and painful intercourse in Hawaii?
Yes. Physical therapy for chronic pelvic pain and pain with intimacy is covered by TRICARE when medically necessary. EMS Therapy treats both by video, one-on-one with a female Doctor of Physical Therapy.
The details
What to know
Answered by the practice of Dr. Elana Shalem, DPT, pelvic floor and orthopedic physical therapist.
Pelvic pain and pain with intimacy are common and often go untreated for years. Pelvic floor physical therapy addresses muscle tension, coordination, nervous-system sensitivity and graded return to activity, alongside the patient's physician.
Treatment is private, at home, with nobody else on the call.
TRICARE Prime needs a referral from the PCM; TRICARE Select does not.
How it works
How a virtual visit works
Most of pelvic floor physical therapy is education, breathing and pressure management, movement retraining, and a home program. All of it works on camera. During the evaluation, Dr. Shalem guides a self-assessment so she can see how the pelvic floor is coordinating with breath and movement. An internal examination is not possible by video; if a hands-on assessment would change the plan, she says so and helps the patient find local care.
