Does TRICARE cover pelvic floor physical therapy for men in Hawaii?
Yes. TRICARE covers medically necessary physical therapy for men's pelvic floor conditions, including leaking after prostate surgery, chronic pelvic pain and urgency. EMS Therapy treats men by video and is in-network with TRICARE West.
The details
What to know
Answered by the practice of Dr. Elana Shalem, DPT, pelvic floor and orthopedic physical therapist.
Men's pelvic floor problems are common among service members, veterans and retirees: leaking after prostatectomy, chronic pelvic pain often labeled prostatitis, urgency and frequency, and pelvic-floor-related erectile dysfunction.
Retirees and family members follow the same rules as for any physical therapy: TRICARE Prime needs a referral, TRICARE Select does not. Retirees 65 and older use Medicare first, with TRICARE For Life as second payer.
Visits are private and one-on-one by video, from home.
How it works
How a virtual visit works
Most of pelvic floor physical therapy is education, breathing and pressure management, movement retraining, and a home program. All of it works on camera. During the evaluation, Dr. Shalem guides a self-assessment so she can see how the pelvic floor is coordinating with breath and movement. An internal examination is not possible by video; if a hands-on assessment would change the plan, she says so and helps the patient find local care.
