What to know

Answered by the practice of Dr. Elana Shalem, DPT, pelvic floor and orthopedic physical therapist.

In-home visits cover Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, Brickell, Key Biscayne, Pinecrest, Palmetto Bay, Miami Beach, Bal Harbour, Surfside, Aventura, Sunny Isles Beach, Homestead and the rest of the county. A private room and a little floor space is all that is needed.

Pregnancy, postpartum recovery, leaking, prolapse, pelvic pain, men's pelvic health and recovery after surgery are all treated at home. Dr. Shalem is a female Doctor of Physical Therapy certified in obstetric physical therapy (CAPP-OB).

EMS Therapy is in-network with Aetna and traditional Medicare in Florida; other plans are private pay with a superbill, and HSA and FSA cards are accepted.

How it works

How a virtual visit works

Most of pelvic floor physical therapy is education, breathing and pressure management, movement retraining, and a home program. All of it works on camera. During the evaluation, Dr. Shalem guides a self-assessment so she can see how the pelvic floor is coordinating with breath and movement. An internal examination is not possible by video; if a hands-on assessment would change the plan, she says so and helps the patient find local care.
