Yes. TRICARE covers medically necessary physical therapy after pregnancy, including pelvic floor physical therapy for leaking, pelvic pain, diastasis recti and recovery after a vaginal or cesarean birth. Prime needs a referral; Select does not.
The details
What to know
Answered by the practice of Dr. Elana Shalem, DPT, pelvic floor and orthopedic physical therapist.
Postpartum pelvic floor problems are common: leaking, heaviness, pain with intimacy, abdominal separation and a return to exercise that does not feel right. Pelvic floor physical therapy is a first-line, conservative treatment for them.
On TRICARE Prime, ask the PCM or the obstetric provider for a referral to pelvic floor physical therapy in the TRICARE West network. On TRICARE Select, book directly.
Visits are by video, so they happen at home with the baby in the room. The full evaluation usually happens once the six-week check is cleared, earlier when the obstetric provider recommends it.
How it works
How a virtual visit works
Most of pelvic floor physical therapy is education, breathing and pressure management, movement retraining, and a home program. All of it works on camera. During the evaluation, Dr. Shalem guides a self-assessment so she can see how the pelvic floor is coordinating with breath and movement. An internal examination is not possible by video; if a hands-on assessment would change the plan, she says so and helps the patient find local care.
