Insurance and referrals
Can military spouses in Hawaii get pelvic floor physical therapy without going on base?
Yes. Several military clinics in Hawaii limit physical therapy to active-duty members, so spouses usually receive physical therapy from TRICARE West network providers. EMS Therapy sees spouses by video at home.

What to know
Answered by the practice of Dr. Elana Shalem, DPT, pelvic floor and orthopedic physical therapist.
Branch clinic physical therapy on Oahu often serves active duty only, so family members are generally referred to the network or, on TRICARE Select, book a network provider directly.
With video, there is no gate pass, no parking and no childcare to arrange. Visits are scheduled around the service member's duty schedule and the household's.
On TRICARE Select, book directly. On TRICARE Prime, ask the PCM for a pelvic floor physical therapy referral in the TRICARE West network and name EMS Therapy.
How it works
How a virtual visit works
Most of pelvic floor physical therapy is education, breathing and pressure management, movement retraining, and a home program. All of it works on camera. During the evaluation, Dr. Shalem guides a self-assessment so she can see how the pelvic floor is coordinating with breath and movement. An internal examination is not possible by video; if a hands-on assessment would change the plan, she says so and helps the patient find local care.
