Insurance and referrals

What should I ask my doctor for to get a pelvic floor physical therapy referral?

Ask for a referral to "pelvic floor physical therapy, evaluate and treat," with the diagnosis written on it (for example urinary incontinence, pelvic pain, or postpartum pelvic floor dysfunction). That wording lets the therapist evaluate and build a plan without going back for a second order.

What to know

Answered by the practice of Dr. Elana Shalem, DPT, pelvic floor and orthopedic physical therapist.

Most physicians are glad to write one; pelvic floor physical therapy is first-line care in their own guidelines for incontinence, prolapse, and chronic pelvic pain. The common mistake is a referral that names a specific number of visits or a specific treatment, which then has to be amended.

If the plan is an HMO or TRICARE Prime, the referral needs to go to a provider in the plan's network, so the patient should name the practice they want to see. The referral can be faxed directly to the practice.

EMS Therapy accepts referrals by fax at 844-886-0285 and provides a one-page referral form for physicians on request.

How it works

How a virtual visit works

Most of pelvic floor physical therapy is education, breathing and pressure management, movement retraining, and a home program. All of it works on camera. During the evaluation, Dr. Shalem guides a self-assessment so she can see how the pelvic floor is coordinating with breath and movement. An internal examination is not possible by video; if a hands-on assessment would change the plan, she says so and helps the patient find local care.
