What to know
Answered by the practice of Dr. Elana Shalem, DPT, pelvic floor and orthopedic physical therapist.
Missoula and Bozeman have a few pelvic health physical therapists with long waits; the Flathead, the Bitterroot, and the mining towns have none. A video visit brings a specialist to Kalispell, Hamilton, Butte, Helena, and Dillon without a mountain pass in winter.
Video visits work the same in Missoula, Kalispell, Whitefish, Bozeman, Butte, Helena, Hamilton, Polson, Anaconda, Dillon, and Livingston as anywhere else in Western Montana. Everything west of the Continental Divide plus Bozeman, Helena, and Butte is seen by video.
Montana allows you to see a physical therapist for evaluation and treatment without a physician referral, with no visit limit. Some insurance plans still ask for one, and we check that for you.

How it works
How a virtual visit works
Most of pelvic floor physical therapy is education, breathing and pressure management, movement retraining, and a home program. All of it works on camera. During the evaluation, Dr. Shalem guides a self-assessment so she can see how the pelvic floor is coordinating with breath and movement. An internal examination is not possible by video; if a hands-on assessment would change the plan, she says so and helps the patient find local care.
