What to know
Answered by the practice of Dr. Elana Shalem, DPT, pelvic floor and orthopedic physical therapist.
Between Westchester and Albany, pelvic health physical therapy thins out quickly, and the Catskills and the Capital Region have very little. Video visits bring a specialist to Poughkeepsie, Kingston, Newburgh, Albany, and Saratoga Springs without the drive.
Video visits work the same in Poughkeepsie, Newburgh, Middletown, Kingston, New Paltz, Albany, Troy, Schenectady, Saratoga Springs, Glens Falls, and Monticello as anywhere else in Hudson Valley and the Capital Region. The Hudson Valley, the Catskills, and the Capital Region are seen by video.
New York allows you to start physical therapy without a referral for up to 10 visits or 30 days, whichever comes first. If care continues beyond that, we help you get a referral from your physician.

How it works
How a virtual visit works
Most of pelvic floor physical therapy is education, breathing and pressure management, movement retraining, and a home program. All of it works on camera. During the evaluation, Dr. Shalem guides a self-assessment so she can see how the pelvic floor is coordinating with breath and movement. An internal examination is not possible by video; if a hands-on assessment would change the plan, she says so and helps the patient find local care.
