What to know

Answered by the practice of Dr. Elana Shalem, DPT, pelvic floor and orthopedic physical therapist.

Billings has a pelvic health physical therapist or two; the Hi-Line and the eastern plains have none for hundreds of miles. A video visit means someone in Havre, Glendive, Sidney, or Miles City sees a specialist this week, from home, including families at Malmstrom Air Force Base.

Video visits work the same in Billings, Great Falls, Havre, Lewistown, Miles City, Glendive, Sidney, Glasgow, Wolf Point, Hardin, and Red Lodge as anywhere else in Central and Eastern Montana. Billings, Great Falls, the Hi-Line, and the eastern plains are seen by video, including military families at Malmstrom AFB.

Montana allows you to see a physical therapist for evaluation and treatment without a physician referral, with no visit limit. Some insurance plans still ask for one, and we check that for you.

How it works

How a virtual visit works

Most of pelvic floor physical therapy is education, breathing and pressure management, movement retraining, and a home program. All of it works on camera. During the evaluation, Dr. Shalem guides a self-assessment so she can see how the pelvic floor is coordinating with breath and movement. An internal examination is not possible by video; if a hands-on assessment would change the plan, she says so and helps the patient find local care.
