Video visits
Is telehealth physical therapy private and HIPAA-compliant?
Yes, when the practice uses a HIPAA-compliant video platform and nobody else is on the call. EMS Therapy visits are one-on-one with Dr. Elana Shalem, DPT, on a HIPAA-compliant platform; nothing is recorded, and the patient chooses where to take the call.
The details
What to know
Answered by the practice of Dr. Elana Shalem, DPT, pelvic floor and orthopedic physical therapist.
HIPAA compliance for telehealth means the video platform signs a business associate agreement, encrypts the call, and does not store it. Consumer apps that do not sign that agreement are not appropriate for medical visits, and a practice should be able to say which platform it uses.
Privacy on the patient's side is the patient's choice: a closed door, headphones, a parked car. Many patients find a video visit more private than a clinic waiting room, where a receptionist and other patients are present.
Notes from the visit are kept in the practice's electronic record like any other medical record, and a visit summary is faxed to the referring provider only with the patient's consent.

How it works
How a virtual visit works
Most of pelvic floor physical therapy is education, breathing and pressure management, movement retraining, and a home program. All of it works on camera. During the evaluation, Dr. Shalem guides a self-assessment so she can see how the pelvic floor is coordinating with breath and movement. An internal examination is not possible by video; if a hands-on assessment would change the plan, she says so and helps the patient find local care.
