Can I do physical therapy at home after knee replacement?
Yes. Large randomized trials of telehealth rehab after total knee replacement have found outcomes equal to in-person clinic rehab, with higher completion rates because there is no travel. The therapist follows the surgeon's protocol over video: range of motion and swelling first, then strength, balance, and return to stairs and activity.

What to know
Answered by the practice of Dr. Elana Shalem, DPT, pelvic floor and orthopedic physical therapist.
The first weeks are about bending and straightening the knee, controlling swelling, and walking safely. The therapist measures range of motion with guided techniques on camera and watches gait and stair technique. Early visits can be as frequent as needed because there is no drive.
The following months progress strengthening, balance, and function with objective criteria for each phase. Progress updates go to the surgical team. Some surgeons prefer an in-person component in the first two weeks, and that is coordinated.
The same model applies to hip replacement and to the strength and return-to-sport phases of ACL rehab.

How it works
How a virtual visit works
Most of pelvic floor physical therapy is education, breathing and pressure management, movement retraining, and a home program. All of it works on camera. During the evaluation, Dr. Shalem guides a self-assessment so she can see how the pelvic floor is coordinating with breath and movement. An internal examination is not possible by video; if a hands-on assessment would change the plan, she says so and helps the patient find local care.
